Paper cut

Anyone that knows me knows that I am not very good at starting with beginners projects. I'll do at least one simple thing when I'm starting off with something new and then I like to move straight on to something more complicated. A few days ago I posted about starting paper cutting, well I have now started on this design from the same book and as you can see it is rather more complicated than the last one. I wanted to start something that was larger so that I could frame in when I've finished. This is the progress I've made so far, it's going to take me a while!

Ben Giles

I just wanted to share with you an artist whose work I think is so beautiful and inspiring. I recently discovered Ben Giles when I was researching for my A level art project and I now can't stop looking at his work! Ben Giles collages explosions of brightly coloured flowers over black and white or muted coloured photos. I think that his artwork is absolutely stunning and such an original idea.

Fashion Friday: Cath Kidston

A Cath Kidston catalogue came in the post this week and I must say although I'm a huge Cath Kidston fan, few of the clothes have really been my taste before. Perhaps I thought there was a bit too much granny and not enough chic. But the new clothes this season seemed perfectly granny chic. Not all the new season clothes in the catalogue are on the website yet, but these are a few of my favourites. There seems to be a navy spotty and floral print theme running through and what's not to love about that? The garments have just the right amount of vintage style through the floral prints but the cut and style brings them brilliantly up to date. Plus I love Cath Kidston bags and how nice is that spot frame bag?

Quote and flowers artwork

Recently I have been doing some drawing experimenting with quotes and flowers. I have a notebook on hand when I am listening to music so that I can write down lyrics that will be perfect to use for artwork. You will probably recognise the style of this piece from some of my previous posts. I have been working with this style for a while (which was originally inspired by Katie Daisy among other artists) and have been developing the styles of fonts that I used as well as the way that I draw and paint the flowers. I have also been experimenting with the layout of the pieces. I love using text in my work and nature is always a heavy influence on my work and this is just one of the results of my experimentation.

Paper cut

I always love trying new crafts and I am a massive fan of Rob Ryan's intricate paper cuts. Ever since I first saw Rob Ryan's work I have wanted to have a go at paper cutting. This Christmas I asked for a book called The crafter's guide to paper cutting by Emily Hogarth. The book includes the history of paper cutting and information about modern day artists as well as projects. At the back of the book there are several designs that can be cut out and used for paper cutting.

So this weekend when I was passing by an art shop I invested in a good craft knife and cutting mat and I have just finished this paper cut design from the book. I have now started a more complicated design and I can say that I am now hooked on paper cutting!

Heartfelt necklace

I love experimenting with different materials to make jewellery and I had a some merino wool tops in lovely pastel colours left over from the needle felted bird I posted about a few days ago. I used a felting mould which is actually meant to create a 3D rose but the petals are heart shaped so I used the mould to needle felt the wool into hearts. When I had made enough hearts I played about with the arrangement of the hearts, once I had decided I attached the hearts together with wire and added a few clear faceted beads in between some of the hearts. I then finished it off with a piece of light purple silk string.

I think that the soft texture and appearance of the hearts is a lovely compliment to the soft pastel colours of the wool. The best thing is that its a fairly large statement necklace but it doesn't weigh you down because the wool is so lightweight.

Fashion Friday: Winter style

With heavy snowfall across much of the UK today you'll be wanting to wrap up nice and warm. But take a winter style tip from Anthropologie.
Wear this Anthropologie beanie with your favourite chunky knit and for a bit of glamour add a statement necklace. This will definitely cheer you up on cold days!

Book Review: The little book of Chanel

I love books and I can't ever have enough of them. At the moment I'm reading several books at once, 100 ideas that changed fashion, The fashion book and 50 fashion designers you should know. Notice the theme yet? I always find vintage clothing as well as modern day garments a strong source of inspiration and I love the chance to discover more about iconic products and designers.

Well I've just finished reading The little book of Chanel by Emma Baxter-Wright and I have to say it's the best book on a design house, particularly the history of Chanel that I have seen so I bought it and it didn't disappoint. The book is split into several sections including The house of Chanel, The Lagerfeld years and accessories. In my opinion it has just the right balance of text and images and you really get a sense of Coco Chanel's designing style and how Karl Lagerfeld has transferred some of the key features of Coco's style into his own collections for Chanel. It is interesting to discover just how many different variations there are of the iconic Chanel suit. This is the perfect book if you want to find out more about the history of Chanel as well as the design house today and it is a brilliant source of inspiration.

Handmade By Hannah painting

I was experimenting with different styles of font when I was drawing the other day. I also added an arc of flowers at the corner and painted the whole thing in watercolour. I was going to use this as a title for my blog but the picture is too large so it takes up half the page! There are some things I just can't work out how to fix on blogger!

Fashion Friday: Miu Miu

Looking at the Miu Miu website the other day I was instantly drawn to the jewels section. I love the vintage style of the pieces and the pink, white and gold colour scheme of many of the items of jewellery. A rather lovely pair of slippers with glitter heels also caught my eye...

And another Christmas present...

Here is another Christmas present that I made, this one was for my best friend. She took a picture of it which is lucky because I didn't think I'd get the chance to show you this, I never got round to taking a photo of it before I wrapped it up. I had originally created this for my A2 Art project and my friend was looking through my sketchbook and asked for one for Christmas. So I painted another one, I took the opportunity to add a few improvements to some parts of the picture. Just small things like the centres of the flowers and some of the colours. For the finishing touch I framed it in a plain white frame.

Needle felted bird

I made this little felted bird from a kit by Gilliangladrag. It is meant to be a clip decoration, but I haven't glued the clip onto the bottom of the bird yet. I don't know if I will actually because it stands up well on it's own and I only want it to sit on a shelf. My bird has much chubbier cheeks than the Gilliangladrag version but that's all part of the charm!

I made a few moderations as well, instead of doing the pattern on only one side of the wings I felted it onto both sides. I also felted parts of the end of the tail more to indent them to create the appearance of feathers. I still have loads of Merino wool tops left over from the kit after completing the bird as well. Now this chirpy chappy can brighten up my shelves!

Fashion Friday: Liberty Print

I mentioned going to London a few days ago and when I was looking around Liberty I saw some gorgeous Liberty print shirts. Its no secret that I'm a bit obsessed with Liberty print and you can pretty much get anything in Liberty print. So here is my pick of my favourite Liberty print items.

The second scarf and the blazer are currently in the sale, its so tempting...

Happy Birthday Handmade by Hannah!

Handmade by Hannah is one year old today! I can't believe it's been a year already, but I've enjoyed writing every single post (I've written 168 of them by the way!). Handmade by Hannah has come a long way since this time last year and it's now on the first page of Google! (when you search Handmade by Hannah). I'd like to say thank you to all my lovely readers and I hope you continue reading Handmade by Hannah for many years to come.

So it seems like a fairly appropriate time to write about the Christmas presents I made. There is another present that I made but I couldn't find it today. The picture is one that I painted of the Pantheon in Rome, it's my Dad's favourite building so I made this for him. The second picture I made for my sister using pieces of patterned fabric and free machine embroidery. I created an Eiffel tower shape and then cut flowers from patterned fabric and sewed them on as well.
